I have been uninspired to write lately. I started this year with many ideas, but they fizzled out. I am 42, does nothing excite me anymore? I wrote a book called Jesus Loves a Crazy Horny Feminist, which covers many of my favourite topics, but even they don’t call to my creativity right now. I had thought of creating a blog style Bachelorette where I fix up my friends and blog about it. Surely, I could do better than they at picking men! Upon putting more thought into that, I thought meh, if I was going to write about dating, perhaps I should go on more dates myself. So, there was my “Aha” moment I could go on dates! With my husband of course this isn’t turning into a blog about swinging!
I have been with the same man for 20 years. We married in the year 2000 after three years of shacking up. We have lived in Ottawa for 10 years, have three children by foster care adoption, have two dogs of questionable intelligence, and live in the suburbs. Offside me being a radical feminist comedian and he being a punk rock loving, heathen following rebel rouser, we are mainstream and a boring middle class couple. I am a comedian and am out many evenings and our kids are finally at an age that we can leave them at home with 80% certainty the house won’t burn down. 20%; I’ll take those odds!
While we have lived in Ottawa for 10 years, I don’t think we can say we have experienced Ottawa; at least not together. We work hard, and do things as a family, but as many married people in our situation, we have not made time for us as a couple. As my husband as explained, him following me around to do comedy is not dating. Oops!
So here we are, 2017 and we are going to date again! I feel like a school girl, oh what to wear!? (jeans, I’ll probably wear jeans) We want to take this opportunity to explore all Ottawa has to offer its married folk. Some dates will be epic and some will just be nice to be away from all distractions and the kids! I talk to him about me blogging about our dates and he said okay as long as I don’t talk about sex. So, I will not be telling you about all the amazing sex we will be having (but trust me, if we are reconnecting the way I think we will, woo goo baby!)
Today I’ll start with our very small date today. What? It’s 10:30 a.m., how did you go on a date already? Breakfast dates are the best! Fresh eyed, fresh make up and the bra is at maximum boob holding strength! We decided to dump the kids and run to our favourite local hang out, Zola’s in Bells Corners. We only had an hour before work but were so glad to get out. We ordered the breakfast special, we are trying to cut down on calories (as you may know I have lost 145 lbs. so have to keep the health train going) so we split it into two with a slice of cheese on the side. Is there anything better than cheese? NO. NO THERE IS NOT.
We always enjoy the atmosphere at Zolas. I have many business meetings there so we often join the staff and management for a quick chat, but today we let them know we were on a date. We put business and kids aside and talked about ourselves. We stared into each other’s eyes, and then decided that was creepy so just held hands and started making fun of things we don’t like. We talked and it felt great. This is not only the man I chose to adopt children with or start a business with. This is my best friend of 20 years, and I am excited to begin this dating adventure!
